There are many ways we can whiten our teeth. Spoiled with choices, how do we know which whitening option to choose?
This month, we sat down with T32 dental surgeon, Dr Chin Shou King, to learn how to choose the suitable teeth whitening method for ourselves.
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure in which whitening products are used to brighten the look of the teeth.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, teeth whitening is generally safe.
Some people may experience discomfort during the whitening process, but the side effects are temporary. If you suspect you have sensitive teeth, it is recommended that you consult a dental professional who can assess and advise on the suitable whitening products and/or treatments.
What are the teeth whitening options available?
There are many teeth whitening choices. If you choose to whiten your teeth with professional help, the methods include:
- Take-home teeth whitening kit dispensed by a dentist
- In-office teeth whitening administered by a dentist (may include maintenance kit)
- Non-vital teeth whitening for root canal treated teeth
How do I know which teeth whitening method I am suitable for?
To know the suitable teeth whitening options for yourself, it is best to consult a dental professional.
During the consultation, the dentist will assess your gums and teeth and advise on the suitable whitening choices. Take your time to discuss with the dentist before proceeding with the treatment.
What should I ask the dentist during the consultation?
Before you decide to proceed with the teeth whitening treatment, make sure that you are informed and comfortable with the advised option.
Questions to ask the dentist include:
- What are the available teeth whitening options suitable for myself?
- How white can I expect my teeth to get?
- What are the short-term side effects and post procedure sensitivity?
- How long will the results last?
- How can I maintain the whitening results?
How long does teeth whitening last?
Regardless of your teeth whitening choice, the whitening results will not be permanent. How long it will last depends on the original colour of your teeth and diet. However, you can prolong the whitening effect with daily maintenance and stain preventive measures.
